Adult Literacy Program Phase 1
Description: The Adult Literacy Program is intended, for the Gambian community residing in Louisville, Kentucky. After a brief survey within our community, we realized that most people within our community were unlettered, especially women. All these people are of age to attend the traditional educational system provided in the State of Kentucky. Therefore, ADLO sees it as a necessity to facilitate an Adult Literacy program for those men and women that are interested to learn the basic skills of reading and writing. We consider the situation alarming as literacy is a crucial step to acquiring the basic skills needed to cope with the many challenges children, youth and adults will face throughout their lives
Objective: The objective is to improve the resourcefulness of our community men and women by empowering them with the basic skills they need in searching for better jobs and helping their kids with homework and other literacy activities.
Framework: The Intended Adult Literacy Program is divided into three phases. The first phase is scheduled to commence on September 19th, 2021, and end on November 19th, 2021 (Two month duration). The classes are intended to be twice a week for a period of between 40 – 45 minutes. (Sunday & Tuesday are the selected days).
Participants: Participation is open to the members of the ADLO that are interested in Adult Literacy. This is in line with the fulfillment of the benefit of being part of the African Diaspora Louisville Organization. The first phase would encompass a maximum of 10 students.
